My 5 Style Rules as an Entrepreneur That I Never Break

Alt Text Dr. Vritika Agrawal — Entrepreneur & Investor sharing her 5 style rules for women entrepreneurs India

The style rules for women entrepreneurs in India are rarely spoken about — and yet, they shape so much of how we are perceived, how we feel, and how we lead.

I have always believed that fashion is not a shallow interest. It is a form of communication. And as an entrepreneur, everything you communicate — including your appearance — sends a message before you even open your mouth.

Over the years of building my career as an entrepreneur and investor, I have developed five style rules that I live by without exception. These are not about following trends or spending a fortune on clothes. They are about showing up with intention — every single day.

Here they are. The five rules I never break.

RULE #1Dress for the version of yourself you are becoming — not where you are right now. Your wardrobe should reflect your ambition, not just your current reality.

This is the rule that changed everything for me. Early in my entrepreneurial journey, I dressed like someone who was still figuring things out — because that is what I was. But the moment I started dressing like the entrepreneur I was becoming, something shifted in how I showed up, how I was received, and — most importantly — how I felt about myself.

Your clothes tell you a story about yourself every morning. Make sure it is the right story. If you are building toward becoming a CEO, dress like one now. If you are working toward being taken seriously in your industry, dress like someone who already is.

You do not dress for where you are. You dress for where you are going. Your wardrobe is a daily vote for the person you are choosing to become.

This does not mean dressing beyond your means. It means dressing with intention — choosing pieces that reflect the clarity, confidence, and ambition of the entrepreneur you are actively becoming.

RULE #2Always choose fit over brand. A perfectly fitted affordable piece will always outshine an expensive ill-fitting one.

This is a rule I have held onto since the very beginning — and it has saved me from many expensive mistakes. In the world of entrepreneurship, there can be pressure to signal success through visible labels and luxury brands. I understand that pressure. I have felt it myself.

But here is what I have learned: nothing communicates elegance, confidence, and style more effectively than a well-fitted garment. A blazer that fits your shoulders perfectly, trousers tailored to your exact length, a dress that moves with your body — these things create a far more powerful impression than any logo ever will.

Invest in tailoring before you invest in brands. The return is far greater.

When you wear something that fits you well, you carry it differently. You stand taller. You move with ease. And that ease — that physical confidence — is immediately visible to everyone in the room.

RULE #3Wear colours that speak before you do. Colour is the most underutilised tool in an entrepreneur’s wardrobe.

Colour psychology is real — and as an entrepreneur, understanding it gives you a quiet but powerful edge. Different colours communicate different qualities, and the shades you choose for important meetings, presentations, or public appearances can subtly shape how people receive you.

Over the years, I have become intentional about colour in my wardrobe. I reach for deep, rich tones when I want to communicate authority and groundedness. I choose warm, approachable colours when I want to create connection and openness. I use bold, statement shades when I want to be memorable and unmistakable.

This does not mean dressing in a calculated, robotic way. It means developing an awareness of how colour works — and using that awareness as a tool in how you present yourself professionally and personally.

The colour you wear to the room is the first sentence you speak. Choose it with the same intention you would choose your opening words.
RULE #4Never sacrifice comfort for style — find pieces that give you both. An entrepreneur who is physically uncomfortable cannot be fully present.

This rule took me longer to learn than I would like to admit. Early on, I sometimes chose outfits that looked impressive but were physically uncomfortable — shoes that hurt, fabrics that restricted movement, silhouettes that required constant adjustment.

And what I found was this: when you are physically uncomfortable, you are not fully present. You are distracted. A part of your attention is always on your discomfort rather than on the conversation, the meeting, the pitch, or the person in front of you.

As an entrepreneur, your presence is one of your most valuable assets. Anything that diminishes it — including physical discomfort — is not worth the compromise.

The goal is always to find pieces that make you look exactly how you want to look AND feel completely at ease. These pieces exist. Finding them is worth every effort.

Today, my wardrobe is built almost entirely on this principle. Every piece I reach for confidently combines visual impact with genuine comfort. That combination is what allows me to show up completely — no distractions, no adjustments, just full presence.

RULE #5Let your personal style be uniquely, unapologetically yours. In a world of imitation, originality is always the most powerful statement.

This is the rule I feel most strongly about — and the one I wish I had fully embraced earlier. For a long time, I looked at how other successful women dressed and tried to model my style on what I saw working for them. And while there is value in observing and learning from others, I was losing something important in the process: my own voice.

Your personal style is an extension of your identity. It is one of the most immediate, visible expressions of who you are — your taste, your values, your personality, your approach to the world. When you dress in a way that feels genuinely yours, people sense that authenticity. And authenticity, in fashion as in entrepreneurship, is magnetic.

I follow fashion closely. I love the creativity, the artistry, the constantly evolving conversations happening in style. But I always filter what I see through the lens of my own identity — taking what resonates and leaving what does not, regardless of what is trending.

Trends will always change. Your personal style — when it is truly yours — only gets stronger, more refined, and more powerful with time.

As an entrepreneur, your brand is built on authenticity. Let your wardrobe reflect the same.

The Common Thread Across All 5 Rules

Looking at these five rules together, I notice the same word running through all of them: intention.

Dressing with intention. Choosing fit with intention. Using colour with intention. Prioritising comfort with intention. Building a personal style with intention.

Intention is what separates getting dressed from dressing well. And it is what separates going through the motions of entrepreneurship from truly building something — in business, in brand, and in the way you show up every single day.

Fashion has taught me that every detail matters. Every choice communicates something. And the discipline of showing up thoughtfully — in your wardrobe, in your work, in every room you walk into — is a discipline that compounds over time into something remarkable.
